Techniques for the treatment of Infantile Cerebral Palsy

Rehabilitation activities are divided into three stages.

Stage 1.

Relaxation of spastic muscles by special manual techniques that affect receptors within that muscle group.

Duration: 2-5 weeks.

Performance Target – the child is able to sit independently in the cross split position for an extended period in relative comfort.

Stage 2.

Consolidation of the results in the central and peripheral nervous systems with the help of acupuncture

At this stage, the following manipulations of reflexotherapy are employed: systems of special static exercises, acupuncture, reflex- segmental and myofascial massage.

Duration: 3-4 months.

Performance Target –Wide amplitude movement of the upper limbs and gradual reduction in contracture of shoulder joints. A child should be able to sit and stand unaided. Quality of active movements increases. Psychomotor impairment is considerably reduced.

Stage 3.

At this stage special a training apparatus and a complex of special "orthopedic" exercises are applied. Without this stage it is impossible for a child to model a correct gait.

Duration: The duration of this stage depends on how long the child spends in a special simulator device (preferably more than 3 hours day) and the number and type of special exercises that he accomplishes during that time.On the average, subject to the above conditions, the duration of this stage may last from 4 to 5 months.

Target: Formation of anatomically correct large and medium-sized joints as well as the articular surfaces of the involved bones. At this stage osteocytes are redistributed in the area of the joints and the joint bearing surfaces of the bones involved in the joint. This is achieved by transferring the child’s body weight onto the axes of formation of the electromagnetic, static and dynamic fields directly within the bone tissue. The process of vibro-acoustic osteoreparation actively reshapes the weight-bearing surfaces of the bones within the joint.
